THE HAIR GROWTH CYCLE

Did you know that as hair falls out it is replaced by new hair produced from the same hair follicle, located under the skin?

WHAT IS A HAIR?

Hair emerges from hair follicles, small sac-like structures located deep in the scalp and whose function is to produce hair. The follicle can go through up to 25 complete growth cycles and the number of follicles decreases with age.

The main component of hair is keratin. In addition to keratin, the presence of melanin is notable, which determines the hair colour.

Under a microscope, our hair would be seen to have three different layers: the cuticle, the cortex and the medulla.

THE LIFE OF HAIR

ANAGEN OR ACTIVE GROWTH PHASE

The hair is in the growth phase. It lasts 2 to 6 years; on average: 3 years.

CATAGEN PHASE OR REGRESSIVE STAGE

The hair stops growing and remains at rest for 3 weeks.

TELOGEN PHASE OR RESTING PHASE

The hair is pushed out and replaced by a new hair. This process is repeated throughout the cycles. This phase lasts 3 months.
